Hon. Ernest Victor Apau, District Chief Executive for Ho West, on 12th June, 2020 handed over 2500 coconut and 1500 citrus seedlings to District Director of Agriculture for free distribution to farmers. The DCE also launched the 1 HOUSEHOLD 1 FRUIT TREE initiative for Ho West.
It is to ensure that every household plants at least one fruit tree to support nutrition, beautify the environment, and mitigate climate change. It is also aimed at making agriculture attractive to our teaming youth. Hon Apau in his speech indicated that since 2018 when the Assembly toped Volta Region in the successful implementation off PERD, Ho West District continues to excel under his watch.
He appreciated the hardworking staff of the Agric Department, traditional authority, Hon. Assembly Members and entire Ho West for continuous support. The DCE stated that one of his initiatives currently under implementation is the planting of trees to save all water bodies in Ho West and indicated that 20000 Afram seedlings are being distributed to various communities in this regard.
Hon Apau ended by dropping a hint on another initiative, 1 Electoral Area 1 Nursery. He noted that from August, 2020 nurseries will begin in all 25 Electoral Areas of Ho West to make transportation and distribution of coconut, citrus, cashew, mahogany, coffee, cocoa and others more accessible to farmers in very large quantities for free. On his part, the District Director of Agriculture, Mr. Seth Rashid Asuo indicated that his staff are evenly distributed in the district to see to the welfare of farmers. He also encouraged community members to support the initiative. The District Crop Officer, Mr. Matthew Abotsi demonstrated the planting process to beneficiaries and stakeholders to ensure successful planting.
In attendance were representatives of Ho West Queen Mothers Association who have adopted the initiative and will lead the campaign for its successful implementation.
The Ho West Assembly was established by the Legislative Instrument (LI) 2083 of 2012. It is the highest political and administrative authority in the District. The population of the District stood at 94,600 as shown in Table1 (2010 Population and Housing Census).
