One of the District Chief Executive’s environmental support initiatives where trees will be planted along all water bodies in the district will take effect on 15th May, 2020. Out of 15000 seedlings available now, 8000 will be planted along 26 water bodies (rivers and streams) throughout the district.
7000 will be distributed to individuals to intercrop in their cocoa, coffee farms and in some cases initiate private afforestation. The DCE Hon. Ernest Victor Apau called on Traditional Authorities, Hon Assembly Members and Unit Committees to organize volunteers in each community to do the planting whiles observing social distancing. Technical Officers have been detailed to assist at all localities he stated.
The project he indicated also aims at rejuvenating communal spirit in the people of Ho West. According to the DCE, from 2021 a minimum of 20000 seedlings will have to be distributed annually to private and group afforestation projects. He added that if this is sustained over a period of ten years, the district will have great results. He indicated further that free distribution of various tree crops under Planting for Export and Rural Development (PERD) and DCE’s initiative of 1 Paramountcy 1 Farm will continue within the same period. He also hopes that all will support this laudable initiative for a safer Ho West.
The Ho West Assembly was established by the Legislative Instrument (LI) 2083 of 2012. It is the highest political and administrative authority in the District. The population of the District stood at 94,600 as shown in Table1 (2010 Population and Housing Census).
