The President of the Republic of Ghana, H.E. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Tuesday 1st September, 2020, commissioned the Amedzofe Water System under the Republic of Ghana and Kingdom of Spain Debt-SWAP for Development.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, the President stated that his government will continue to create an enabling environment through the provision of social infrastructure to attract investment to rural communities and was hopeful that with the availability of portable water in the area, investors will take advantage of government’s flagship programs such as One District One Factory to establish small scale and medium factories to create employment opportunities for the youth of the community, and stimulate the growth and development of the local economy.
President Akufo Addo assured that government will not relent on its effort to increase access to “Water for all”. For this, funding has been secured for the commencement of work on the Rural Community and Small Towns Project, otherwise known as Aqua Africa Water Project. The project will construct 150 water points and 12 small towns water system across Volta, Oti, Greater Accra, Eastern and Ashanti regions. Once completed, 280,000 people will benefit. The President further said that development has been distributed equitably to all parts of the country and the impact of his policies has been felt by all.
He urged the beneficial community to help maintain the water infrastructure so that they can continue to have access to portable water, through that they ensure the general well being and health. According to the President Volta Region has not being single out for any special military operations. The deployment was an ongoing exercise across all the borders and not Volta alone. He indicated that the military were not stationed at borders to execute any political or ethnic agenda but rather to guide the borders against political terrorist attacks on our shores and to prevent the importation of the virus into the country since the borders are closed. I may have my own failures, as we all do, but being tribal is not one of them” he stated.
He therefore urged all to shone those who promote ethnic sentiments and divisions amongst us for their selfish partisan political agenda. Touching on Covid 19, Nana Addo appeal to the people to continue adhering to the protocols by washing hands with soap under running water, observe social distancing, avoid shaking of hands, cover nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing and wearing of face mask whenever they leave their homes. He added that the number of active cases in the region is relatively low, but all hands must be on deck to eliminate the virus altogether in the region and the country as a whole.
The chairman for the occasion Dr. Eli Atipui called on the government to invest in the potential tourist attraction of the area, capable of generating revenue and employment for the youth. In the Presidents team were the Minister for Energy, Minister for Sanitation and Natural Resources, Minister for Roads and Highways, Minster for Chieftaincy, the Special Advisor to the President, Regional Volta Minister, Deputy Volta Regional Minister, Deputy Minister of Information, Municipal and District Chief Executives and Regional Executive of the party.
In attendance were the Chiefs of Ho West, partners from the Spanish Embassy, Board Members of Community and Sanitation Agency, Hon Assembly Members, the Clergy, Parliamentary Candidate for NPP, Heads of Departments/Units, the Media and party faithfuls.
The Ho West Assembly was established by the Legislative Instrument (LI) 2083 of 2012. It is the highest political and administrative authority in the District. The population of the District stood at 94,600 as shown in Table1 (2010 Population and Housing Census).
